- StandKeep your hand as-is and end your turn.
- HitDraw additional card(s) until satisfied or bust (over 21, immediate loss).
- Double DownDouble your bet, receive one more card only. Often best on 10 or 11.
- SplitSplit pairs (or 10-value cards at some tables) into two hands with equal additional bet. Play each hand normally. Aces get one card; split 21 is not blackjack. Re-splits often allowed up to 4 hands.
- SurrenderForfeit half your bet and fold without playing. Only on first two cards, not available everywhere.
How to play Blackjack
There is a lot of bad advice to be found at casinos and online about blackjack. One common misconception is: "The object of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over." That is far from the truth.
The real objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer. To do this, you must not bust (go over 21), while ideally forcing the dealer to bust.
To better understand how blackjack works, here are the basic rules:
- Blackjack is played with 1 to 8 standard 52-card decks.
- Aces count as 1 or 11, cards 2-9 as face value, 10s/J/Q/K as 10.
- A hand's value is the sum of its cards. A blackjack (ace + 10-value card) is the best hand and beats any other 21.
- After bets are placed, the dealer deals two cards face-up to each player and two to themselves: one up, one hole card.
- If the dealer's upcard is an ace, insurance is offered: an optional side bet up to half your wager, paying 2:1 if dealer has blackjack.
- If upcard is 10 or ace, dealer peeks for blackjack. If dealer has it, bets lose (player blackjack pushes), insurance pays.
Play starts with the player left of the dealer. Your choices include:
Playing Your Hand
After all players act, dealer reveals hole card and must hit on 16 or less, stand on 17+. On soft 17 (ace+6), some rules hit, others stand.
If dealer busts, non-busted players win even money (1:1).
If not, higher total wins (ties push). Blackjack pays 3:2 typically; beware 6:5 tables favoring the house.
